Jennifer de Leon

Creator / Illustrator

“What are you?”  I have heard and answered this question frequently.  Some people tend to have a hard time figuring out my ethnicity.  I do not mind answering, but I find it to be an odd question.  Color Me Human promotes diversity and cultural awareness by recognizing humanity’s differences and celebrating our similarities.  I have chosen this theme to answer that question.  What am I?  I am human.

The female figure is my favorite subject matter.  As such, this project features hand-drawn illustrations of beautiful women from all around the world, adorned with various floral emblems and ethnic patterns.  The patterns represent our different backgrounds and cultures, while the flowers symbolize the similarities that bond us together.

As a multidisciplinary artist, I combine analog and digital techniques in my creative process.  In this project, I start with a pencil sketch to help establish the composition and layout.  Once the design is mapped out, I add intricate details to enhance the design.  Finally, I scan my hand-drawn sketch and add ink digitally.

I am excited to share this creative experience with others.  Through this project, I wanted to create inspiring illustrations that would provide hours of fun and relaxation for everyone.  I hope my project will inspire others to find their inner artist.
